Working as a freelance composer in the field of both contemporary composed and jazz- and improvised music. Regularly commissioned by a.o. the Dutch Fund for the Creating Arts.
A performing jazz/improvised guitar player. Performing with his own groups and as a sideman.
As a composition teacher his main focus is on contemporary music for both acoustic instruments and the use of technology in composition. He teaches guitar, improvisation and ensemble.
He also teaches Zen meditation for musicians.

Vereniging Baixim is the production company that produces all the music productions of Marc van Vugt and Ineke van Doorn. It has a record label (Baixim records) and a Publishing company (Baixim Music Publishing). There is a close collaboration with Timeless records that releases their cd’s since 2000.

As a composer he has been involved with several projects both in contemporary composed as well as jazz and improvised music. A selection:
1988 'What's the choice ?' for soprano sax and midi controlled sound sources.
1988 'Moving' for saxophone quartet.
1989 ’On two feet', for wind ensemble and midi percussion. Written for Utrecht Moderna conducted by Jurjen Hempel
1990 'And then there were three' for bass clarinet, midi controlled pitch shifters and sound sources. Commissioned by the Dutch Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (Fund for creative tone art)
1991 "Words" a 45 minutes radio phonic play with the vocal trio 'Voice lab.' for the Dutch broadcasting company who also commissioned the composition.
1991 'Pokerface' for 7 singers and a percussion player. Commissioned by the Dutch Fonds voor de Scheppende toonkunst (Fund for creative tone art) for the a capelle jazzchoir 'Tamam', lead by Peggy Larson.
1992 'Circuling' for 5 percussionists. Written for the Circle percussion ensemble. Premiere march 1993.
1993 'As They Marched By', commissioned by the Dutch Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (Fund for creative tone art) for a new ensemble consisting of two electric guitar players, two percussionists and an amplified bass clarinet.
1994 'The Great Steel Secret', score to the silent movie performed live by the Basho ensemble (conductor Jurrien Sligter), a contemporary music ensemble (5 strings, 4 woodwinds, horn, piano and percussion) a contemporary music ensemble. In a project with compositions of a.o. composer Willem Breuker and Henny Vrienten. 1996 ‘Mekaron’, a contemporary piece for chamber orchestra and three vocal soloists. Commissioned by the Basho ensemble that performed it in a tour project with music based on native American music.
1996 “The Fantastic Airship”. A multimedia project with a combination of the music of Marc van Vugt, surrealistic silent movies by Georges Melies and performances by the Dutch video artist Pieter Baan Muller. Music performed by the ensemble Marc van Vugts Big Bizar Habit, featuring a.o. vocalist Ineke van Doorn, percussionist Michael Vatcher (USA), trumpet player Chris Kase (USA) and violoncello player Paul Stouthamer (Spain). The compositions were commissioned by the Amsterdam Fund for the Art. The project was financed by the Amsterdam Fund for the Art, The Home copy foundation and the Dutch Film museum.
1997 “The Heron and The Fish” and “Un Locataire Dialbolique”, for bandoneon, bass clarinet and percussion. For Joshua Samsons Audible Lifestream. Commissioned by the by the Dutch Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (Fund for creative tone art)

As a musician he has a lot of experience in several groups playing in Europe.
Some important groups:
1992 ‘Bizar Habit', with alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade, drummer Dre Pallemaerts and bassplayer Tjitze Vogel. All music is written by Marc van Vugt and balances on the edge of improvised and contemporary composed music. Several radio appearances and very good reviews in the national media. Recordings for the Dutch radio.
1996 “van Vugt/Tarenskeen/Samson”, a trio with two acoustic guitars and percussion performing original music of Marc van Vugt and Olaf Tarenskeen.
1996 “Marc van Vugts Big Bizar Habit”, a jazz chamber orchestra consisting of a jazzstringquartet, three horns (trp, sax, trb), piano, guitar, bass, percussion and vocals. December 1996 they performed as a part of the project “The Fantastic Airship” and March 1998 a new project: “the Orchestra Project” will be starting, featuring all new work by Marc van Vugt. Music on the edge of jazz, contemporary composed and rock music. Cd "Le Dirigrable Fantastique'.
In 1999 the Dutch Film museum released a video of the Fantastic Airship as part of the Sphinks Award that they received.
1991-2004 The group 'Vandoorn', with lyricist/ singer Ineke van Doorn and some of the best musicians from the Netherlands. All music, written by Marc van Vugt. CD 'the Question is me', 1994 features trumpet player Kenny Wheeler and pianist Don Thompson as guests. Several tours have been made with some featuring Kenny Wheeler. CD “President For Life”, 1996 features saxophonist and flute player Thomas Chapin, who also joined the group for some concerts in Europe. Recent release: "Four Brothers" featuring trombonist Robin Eubanks and the Belgian saxophonist Erwin Vann. All music by Marc van Vugt, among which a beautiful voice and string arrangement of Thomas Chapins 'Hush-a- Bird'. Several recordings for the Dutch radio.
1997 Concert tour in Canada, Japan and the USA. Featured on a.o the Montreal Jazz festival and the Texaco New York festival where they performed at the legendary 'Knitting Factory' with featured guest Thomas Chapin.
1998 Ottawa Jazz festival with the Vandoorn duo. Vandoorn was featured at the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) jazz festival in Austria, being the Dutch participants for this festival that was broadcasted all over Europe and Canada.
1998 North Sea Jazz festival with featured guest Robin Eubanks
1999 'Four Brothers' cd presentation tour in Europe.
2000 "Love is a golden glue' the Vandoorn trio: Ineke van Doorn, Marc van Vugt and the famous Dutch trumpet player Eric Vloeimans. Improvised music at its best based on standards and Brazilian music.
